Creating a Hobbit-Inspired Costume for My Three Small Dogs

To the Shire we go!

It all started with a simple idea: What if my dogs could look like tiny hobbits? As a longtime fan of The Lord of the Rings, I’ve always admired the aesthetic of Middle-earth—the earthy greens, the rustic simplicity, the undeniable coziness~ and with three small dogs constantly loitering around like Hobbits, the idea of dressing them in hobbit-inspired capes felt almost too perfect.
So as a Halloween Challenge for myself, I decided to craft some capes for my dogs!🌱
Finding the Right Fabric
I wanted something lightweight and comfortable, so my dogs wouldn’t feel restricted. A soft, mossy green fleece throw blanket caught my eye at the craft store—it had just the right balance of structure and flow. I imagined my little adventurers prancing through the grass, their capes billowing behind them like they were on a quest to deliver the One Treat to rule them all.
Cutting and Crafting the Capes
Since my dogs are roughly the same size, the measurements didn't vary too much and I was able to set a measurement standard. I kept the cape design simple— which consisted of a semi-circle pattern with a hood.

To add some character, I bought a little ring and tied it to a chain to make a necklace! For closures, I debated between buttons, clasps, or ribbons, but ultimately settled on thin, light button-that I could easily adjust for comfort.
